What Reiki means to me?
I have been practicing and teaching the art of Reiki for 25 years as well as other modalities.
I felt compelled to share my perspective on Reiki and its profound impact on my life after encountering a hateful and judgmental post about it from a self- righteous Christian influencer.
It’s ironic that someone who uses Jesus—a symbol of love and unity—to justify her judgments and fears would call Reiki “devil’s work” and predict hell for its practitioners or those who seek it. This typical fear-based rhetoric comes from a bitter, ego-driven woman. I won’t give her attention by naming her.
Reading that post triggered me deeply. It was disheartening to see such vicious attacks on a beautiful healing modality from someone who clearly lacks experience and understanding of Reiki’s history and origins.
Welcome to the 21st century, where many accept everything they hear without questioning or conducting their own research. If more people did their due diligence, perhaps the world wouldn't be in such turmoil.
Initially, I took her words personally, allowing my teachings to slip away. One of the key lessons from Don Miguel Ruiz’s book, *The Four Agreements*, is
“Do not take things personally." I took time to reflect and recognised a long-buried wound within me, so I am grateful to her for that.
My mother was a devoted Christian, consistently attending church, volunteering, and donating. When I began my journey as a healer, I longed to share Reiki’s magic with her. However, her priest labeled my work as “devil’s work,” which hurt deeply. It was painful to see her trust the judgment of a man driven by ego and insecurity, calling himself a man of God.
Years later, I encountered him during her final days and witnessed his arrogance - there was no compassion in him. His role as a priest seemed to serve only to elevate his own sense of power and ego. This is why I encourage people to bypass the middleman and connect directly with the source - creator.
Only when she fell ill did she request a healing and finally began to understand.
What initially drew me to Reiki was it is universal energy - there are no religious requirements, no deities to worship, no elaborate ceremonies or countless rules. Reiki embodies universal energy that is unconditional love.
It’s principles are straightforward:
- - - - -
JUST FOR TODAY, DO NOT WORRY
JUST FOR TODAY, DO NOT GET ANGRY
JUST FOR TODAY, WORK HONESTLY
JUST FOR TODAY, BE COMPASSIONATE TO YOURSELF AND OTHERS
JUST FOR TODAY, BE Humble
Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, was an incredible and humble man who inspired many through his teachings and healings. His journey is truly inspiring.
It is hypocritical to cast hatred toward him while identifying as a Christian, revealing how ignorance can perpetuate division.
Before casting judgments, I encourage you to conduct your own research and trust your intuition. While there are certainly those who call themselves masters (after doing a 2 day online course), the latest - grandmasters and shamans out of ego, we cannot judge all Reiki practitioners or healers by the actions of some — just as we cannot generalise about Doctors, Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc.
For me, Reiki has been transformative. It helped heal the physical pain I endured for the first 32 years of my life. It is a source of creation and oneness - pure love. Most importantly, Reiki allows you to connect directly with source - creator, bypassing intermediaries.
Don’t just take my word for it - do your own research. As Don Miguel Ruiz says in *The Fifth Agreement*, "Be skeptical, but learn to listen."
If you choose to explore Reiki, take a moment to set your intentions and ground your energy. Remember that Reiki often brings emotions to the surface for you to address. If you feel sadness or anger, find a healthy way to release those feelings—perhaps through physical activity or expressive outlets. For me it is boxing.
I encourage my clients to affirm their intentions and protection with this statement:
“I accept this healing as long as it comes from unconditional love, is for my greatest good, and comes from the Creator. If not, I am fully protected now.”
Renember you have free will.
I am grateful for the person who sparked this reflection, as it helped me heal an old wound and reminded me that nothing is personal. Reiki connects you with the pure source of love, and it’s essential to remember that you have free will. Don’t let anyone dictate what you should believe, do, or be. Question everything, and discover what resonates with you.
